Actually, it did pop off right before the dive as I was putting my gear on.
I did my usual check, starting with the inflator, and figured my gas was
off. I reached back to turn my tank on, thinking maybe I had turned it off.
We were diving off of a borrowed, really expensive yacht, and I had set my
gear up on a towel on the aft deck trying not to damage anything, so I
thought maybe I did turn it back off when I laid the gear on the towel. As
it turned out, my gas was on, and that was when I went right to the inflator
connection and discovered that the inflator had disconnected itself in the
manner you mentioned. However, I do not think this would occur underwater,
and the ease of disconnect outweighs the risk of accidental disconnect. Like
you said, it was a matter of a split second for me to realize what the issue
was.

And you are correct - I have no serviceable gear - I throw it away if it
does not work. I have no spare parts, no dive tools. If it breaks, it goes
in the trash and I buy something that does not break. The really funny thing
is what I ended up with after all these years - a load of Apex regs, Oceanic
pressure gauges, Scuba Pro jetfins, and of course my Halcyon wings and other
items.
