Aloha Mike...I had the same problem with Quantas when I went to the Solomons in 2001 (?). Not only did they REFUSE to take the suitcase, they were extremely RUDE about it. I will no longer fly Quantas if I can possibly avoid it! There I was at Honolulu airport, an hour's flight from home at 10pm, with NOTHING open and the man refused my suitcase and walked away. Finally a skycap took pity on me and found me a plastic bag to put about 10lbs of overage into. Quite a nasty business, that! Aloha, Dee
