Subject: Continental baggage embargo
My wife and I just got back from a trip to Belize. When we flew out
from Oakland, we almost received an unpleasant surprise: the
Continental Airlines clerk accepting our luggage, which had one
overweight bag, checked to see if a baggage embargo was in effect. If
it was, we wouldn't be able to take our overweight bag, which
contained most of my video equipment. Fortunately it wasn't. But if
it had been, we'd have been stuck at the airport with 15 lbs. of
excess baggage that we wouldn't have known what to do with.
I'd never heard of a baggage embargo before. It seems that not only
have airlines dropped weight allowances from 70 lbs. to 50 lbs. per
bag, but they also -- at times -- refuse to carry anything overweight
no matter how much you're willing to pay. For details, check this
Continental web page that's buried deep in their site:
http://www.continental.com/travel/policies/baggage/embargo.asp
Does anyone know if there are other airlines practicing this rather
nasty policy?
