Paul, since you mentioned it I'll add a bit to your comments. When I was
initially cave trained I had the pleasure of running across an instructor
unbeknownst to me/us that he had adopted a lot of the DIR gear config and
philosophy while still trying to maintain his status as a "good guy" in the
NACD good 'ol boy circle. It essentially happened by chance as our first
instructor had a prior commitment and had to hand us over to this guy to
complete our week long full cave course. The last day of the course he drove
us out to the Orlowski trailer to "show" us what was wrong with NACD at the
time. I almost thought it was a joke as a NACD rebreather instructor sat on
a couch in a trailer with a dish sized ashtray full of cigarette butts and
one in her mouth, lol. I still remember that day...........
Anyway, flash forward about 4 years and I only dove with the same person in
a cave for that amount of time. In my mind we had it wired for the weenie
dives we were doing compared to the wkpp guys and others around the country
but we had our shit wired tight. Then one day out of nowhere he tweaks on me
doing a warm-up circuit dive and wants to turn the dive a couple hundred
feet from daylight. I was like "wtf"? What's wrong?, he's breathing fine,
equipment is fine, just has this wild look in his eyes. He then turns around
on me and is hauling ass out. We had plenty of gas as we were using our
stages for travel and our doubles as back up but he was not stopping for
anything. If I had not kept up with his adrenaline jacked swim out, he would
have left me behind. We surfaced and he looked me straight in the eyes and
said "I'm sorry, I lost it". I said me too. That was our last dive. I had
known the guy since high school and up to that point had put my life in his
hands many, many times. It just reiterates your comments on not knowing
~who~ you are diving with.
Regards,
Eric

I just wanted to make a quick comment on rule number one. I know it
gets a lot of press, but I think few people really think about it
much. It's easy to know in retrospect when you've broken it, because
the guy you dove with did something monumentally stupid. However, it
is much harder to know in advance who will and who will NOT be a good
buddy (which is ultimately what rule number one is about). The
lesson I learned the hard way is that you should slowly increase the
level of the dives you do with people so that you can evaluate them
over a series of more and more complicated dives until you are
absolutely sure of them. It is foolish to think that you can judge
someone quickly. Also, relying on hearsay and so on is foolish as
well. People may come from a very different diving philosophy and
what they consider "a phenomenal diver" may not mean much in terms of
DIR, even for a simple dive. In short, following rule number sounds
simple, but sometimes it isn't, especially if you are diving with
someone you don't really know.
Enjoy the water while you can!
