My thoughts are that bleach would be not just a bad
idea, but a VERY bad idea. I would think that it would
attack the integrity of the shell.
For my thinsulate I do as you have done Dan.. wait
until the thing offends terribly. I then use a friends
top load washer and use a 1 1/2 cups vinegar I fill
the machine and put the undergarment in making sure it
is fully wet by pushing it down in.. I let it set for
about a 1/2 hour playing with it periodically. I then
run the machine through a cycle.. I set it on the
gentlest setting the machine has... I repeat this with
two plain water washes. I don't let the washer spin
out the last time on the first two cycles but let it
do it's thing on the last wash cycle. I then lay the
garment on a piece of grid shelving (you want it to be
plastic coated, I have mine just long enough to fit in
the bathtub) so that the garment can drain properly.
It may take 2 full days to dry in this fashion so be
sure to give yourself some time. I usually only have
to do the undergarment 1 maybe 2 times a year. Of
course here in the PNW with the temp's the way they
are I don't sweat all that much.
One of my thinsulate undergarments is about 6 yrs old
and I think it is just as warm as when I got it..
There has been zero falling of the thinsulate on
either my 400gm or the 200gm. I also have a DC
thinsulate that I wash in the same fashion with good
results.
Don't use a dryer on them if it is at all avoidable..
I have done it on air dry but really think all-in-all
it is a bad idea.. I was forced... couldn't wait for
the dive and had to have the 400gm but absolutely
could not stand to get near the thing.
Wish you all the luck.
Marry Christmas everyone...
