Hoping to "shed a little light" here...
>From "Perception of Color" section 2.2.2, p23 (Nevo, 99)
A. The most visible colors in natural lighting under water are as follows:
1. In rivers, harbors and other reservoirs where the water is turbid, the most visible color is fluorescent orange. White, yellow, orange and red are the most visible of the regular colors.
2. In coastal waters of medium turbidity, fluorescent green and orange are the preferred colors. White, yellow and orange are the most visible regular colors.
3. In clear water, fluorescent green and white are preferred colors. In general, fluorescent colors are more visible than regular colors. Among regular colors, white is the most easily seen.
B. The most difficult colors to discern under water are black and gray. Other colors with low visibility are orange and red in clear water and blue and green in turbid water.
C. For definitive identification of colors (as opposed to simple discernment of color), the combination of blue, green orange and black is preferred in clear water while the combination of green, yellow, red and black is best in unclear water.

This isn't complete, but it's all I'll post in the interest of keeping the IP lawyers on this list off of my ass. :) If you're into this sort of thing, I'd recommend this book, it's a great compilation of many of the research works that apply do diving.
What it really boils down to is this: if we weren't all such macho jocks, we'd be diving fluorescent drysuits and the ugliest dive gear known to man. It would actually be a lot safer. (and yes, I dive a black TLS350 too, so count me in that category as well)

Alas, the "Sitchin Purple" was a second choice to the "Sitchin Teal" which
was not available in the heavier cordura overlay, or the "Sitchin Fuscia" from
the prior two DUI suits (time for a change). The purple is not as visible
in water (or above as compared to blue ocean) as the purple. Being at least a
bit colorful is more interesting for appearing in underwater photos.
Lime green, bright yellows, and of course, orange, as well as some other
"hot" colors like some shades of pink, create contrast and become easier to spot
in/above the water. White is good underwater, but can blend in with white
caps on the ocean surface.

Naw,
I skipped the "Irvine Red" and went with "Elmore Blues". But there is also
"Sitchin Purple" and limited edition "Christos All American " color schemes.
This is actually one of the few places to put color in your DIR rig besides
surfing EBay for the blue, pink, or purple XL jetfins.
I believe this falls under Rule #6, "Look good while doing it!"
But I believe this rule was put forth by a former GUE instructor so I don't
know if the rule left with him or not?
