While I agree with all of this, I had an interesting experience a couple
years ago.
It's dead obvious when your BT goes blank, It's dead and you use your
buddy's...
However on this one dive it turned out my BT gave a 7m (23ft) shallower
depth than actual.
We caught it pretty fast something was wrong when I was enthusiastically
breaking our planned max. depth and my buddy stopped me; but when comparing
both BT.... which one was showing the truth?
This was on a shore dive with no real references or landmarks and where 2m
(6ft.) of viz. is considered "good"
Since then I carry a suunto stinger as a "watch" to cross check the BT, and
be able to do a majority vote with my buddy should something similar happen
again.
So I can understand Paul's logic; If we are carrying a watch anyway, it
might just as well show depth too...
however... since my BT is a uwatec BT calibrated for fresh water, and the
stinger is calibrated for salt water... they don't show the same depth
anyway ;-)
Especially at greater depth...
